Piracy Debate Rages on
This week has been one of the busiest weeks in terms of piracy debate for UK net users ever, with the Digital Economy Bill being released and many people incredibly worried about its content.
We?ve spoke before about the government?s three strikes plans to disconnect users and how such plans are flawed: Firstly because they don?t take into account innocent net users can have their wireless networks broken into and secondly because they are presuming guilt without a fair trial ? something that this country is usually quite strongly against.
The new bill goes even further, giving the Secretary of State for Business huge powers to impose new copyright laws and sanctions without debate.
Of course, it?s not just us that are against this ? the UK internet Providers Association (ISPA) and TalkTalk have both come out in strong opposition of the new bill, and even celebrity Stephen Fry has been behind a huge push to get people to sign an online petition on the Number 10 website to shoot down the bill.
?We don?t support copyright infringement in any way but we live in the real world and understand that no amount of policing and censorship will solve the problem,? Said Charles Dunstone, head of TalkTalk. ?It doesn’t matter how many websites are blocked, how many services are shut down or how many individuals are pursued, people will always find ways to access copyrighted content for free.?
The music industry ? the largest industry behind the push to get bills like this passed ? would have the average Briton believe that piracy is destroying their business and bringing down the entertainment world. However, this year 117 million singles have been sold ? a record breaking year and a continuing upward sales trend. Music sales are also up by over 4% despite the recession and stand at around a billion pounds. It?s hardly an industry in crisis.Tweet
