Fourth Generation (4G) mobile broadband technology could provide vast improvements over the current 3G network providing speed and range boosts for all major providers – but speaking with PC Pro, mobile and technology company Ericsson have warned that the UK might not see such technology until 2012 at the earliest, despite countries across the world already deploying the technology.
The 900MHz range is currently owned by Vodafone and O2 and it’s expected that it will be at least a year before government redistribution takes place. Competing mobile company Ericson believe their own mobile broadband technology won’t be available for another 3 years because of this.
The company also warned that a reliance on existing infrastructure would mean that Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology would not be able to reach its maximum theoretical speed of 150 Mbps. Despite this, 4G could still offer a speed boost of up to 10 times the current 3.6 Mbps line provides – something similar to the difference between a standard dial-up and broadband service.
It’s a shame that the UK will be falling behind in the mobile broadband sector even as it struggles to keep up with most of Europe in terms of fixed line speeds. BT has recently announced the governments ‘broadband tax’ won’t be enough to reach the target of having 100% of the country within range of a 2 Mbps ADSL service by 2012.
Meanwhile, both the USA and China will be rolling out LTE services later this year.
