Mobile Broadband is set to be the next big thing in business technology according to a report developed earlier this month by Juniper Research. The report states that mobile business is set to grow by nearly 60% in the next few years.

The report suggests that the widening of mobile networks combined with a greater range of devices using the technology – and becoming cheaper every year – will have a massive impact on the way people do business in the future. The report suggests that this technology will begin the move to “unwired enterprise” where, at least in some cases, the wired networks of old will be made completely obsolete by the new technology.

There will be 722 million business mobile connections active around the world within the next five years, although it believes that that majority of these will still be the more traditional mobile phone handsets. The firm does predict that more and more business will use the technology in laptops and other more advance portable devices although these will still be in the minority for the foreseeable future.

It also believes there will be a move away from wireless ‘dongles’ to devices that have mobile broadband modems integrated into their systems, stating that the number of computers using this technology will grow more than 300% between 2008 and 2014. That’s quite a massive number, although anyone that used to struggle with having to buy separate Ethernet or wireless network adapters for their laptops before the days everything came ‘on board’ should find this predication pretty familiar.

Report author Andrew Kitson commented: “By the end of 2009, portables will account for around 60% of annual PC sales, suggesting that businesses are placing less emphasis on desktop machines and investing on combined laptop-and-phone packages for employees. As 3G networks proliferate, so it will become more cost effective to replicate the desktop solution with a wireless device.”

Although the report is obviously based on predictions, it seems like a lot of the main findings detailed are already taking place. More and more businesses already understand the importance of mobile business, although it’s the larger firms that seem to be leading the way. As the technology gets more practical and the coverage becomes both stronger and faster, it’s hard to see mobile broadband slowing down any time soon, if not for home consumers than certainly for the modern business world.
