Broadband has been seen as a crucial part of our lives for a long time now and it’s hard to imagine how we ever survived using dial-up or, worse, not having any form of internet at all.
A new study by mobile communications firm O2 has revealed just how important some form of broadband access is to people in Britain by highlighting that 67% of people don’t want to cut back on their own home broadband access, while only 25% could say the same thing for the food bills.
Alistair Johnston, Marketing Director for O2 UK, commented: “This report reveals just how pervasive technology now is within UK homes. At O2 we strongly believe that technology has a hugely positive role to play in helping families better manage their hectic lives, but also ultimately in being able to spend more time together.”
The news isn’t so surprising when you consider just how many families now consider the internet to be one of the keys ways to communicate with each other. Of the families surveyed, over half believed that email and mobile phones helped them to communicate more easily with each other. A further third believed that mobile internet and email made it easier to balance their work and family life.
The internet can also been seen as an important and relatively cheap tool for entertainment in a time when going to restaurants or the cinema might seem like expensive pursuits. It’s also worth noting that the amount of special deals, comparison sites, avoidance of having to call expensive technical support lines and services like Skype and video conferencing could all add up to mean that the average internet subscription could pay for itself In the long term.
